House Tour Provides Look Inside Classic Victorians Ten houses, a church, and a church that used to be a house will be open for the Webster Street Historic District House tour on Sept. 22 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets cost $25 (cash or check). They may be purchase on tour day at 2405 Washington St. (between Webster and Fillmore). The tour is a celebration of a successful effort to protect the architectural integrity and residential quality of the neighborhood. It is also a fundraiser to pay remaining legal bills that resulted from the 2 l/2 year struggle. The tour, a project of PHRA, has been funded in part by a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The houses are classic Victorians built in 1878 or
1888 by some of the primary contractors of that period. Not
mansions or museums, many were identical row houses. They have
evolved very differently over the years --including the one that became
church. People who take the tour will be able to see those
alterations, as well as the very different ways people decorate similar
spaces. For further information, call 929-5201 or email websterstreethistoricdistrict@hotmail.com. |
