Revamped Dog Run South for Lafayette Park; Fence, Water, Lighting Needed

About 50 dog owners have asked the Department of Parks and Recreation to create a better dog run area at Lafayette Park for the safety of dogs and "to allow mothers with strollers, joggers and canine-phobic individuals to perambulate in peace." PHRA supports the plan.

The group proposes putting a four-foot-high chain link fence around a 60-feet by 300-feet area, starting east of the path that bisects the park at Octavia Street. A hedge on three sides would disguise the fence.

Six benches in the western part of the enclosure and a water fountain were also requested, and grading to improve drainage. The group also noted that several trash containers are needed at the northern part of the park.

Finally, the group requested lighting, especially along the path that bisects the park from north to south. That would be "extremely helpful and provide pedestrians, as well as dog owners, adequate safety."

More information is available on the group’s web site, www.smartgroups.com/groups/LafayettePark.
