Presidio Trust Board Meeting
Wednesday, September 22, 2010
Golden Gate Club, Presidio
6:30pm
This was the last time public comment was received before the
Presidio Trust decides whether to approve the construction of a
large hotel complex on the Main Post's Main Parade Ground, the
most historic part of the Presidio.
The proposal before
the Board is to allow some 70,000 sq. ft. of new construction
and the conversion of some 20,000 sq. ft. of existing space on
the eastern edge of the Main Parade, all directly opposite and
facing the iconic Montgomery St. barracks buildings, for the
building of approximately 100 rooms housing about 200 guests,
along with restaurant and bar facilities.
Opposition to the
plan has been voiced by many neighborhood and civic groups.
Objections include:
- If any such large construction at that site is
authorized, it should be for a much needed, prominently
placed and readily accessible Visitors Center and Heritage
Museum. A Visitors Center/Heritage Museum would genuinely
animate the Main Post by bringing daytime visitors who will
be engaged in Presidio activities, rather than sleeping and
dining guests.
- Construction of a large hotel complex, which would then
be the dominant new facility on the Main Post, would
derogate the historical importance of the site.
- The Trust's Executive Director has publicly acknowledged
that such a hotel complex will not provide significant
revenue to the Trust due to the large development costs.
- There is no need for large hotel lodging on the Main
Post: The Presidio is not a remotely located national park;
there are numerous accommodations nearby; Main Post lodging
has been planned for and can be expanded in existing
buildings.
Please come to the
meeting and sign up to speak to the Trust on this important
issue.
